The International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE, 1959-65) has been the largest international effort ever undertaken to explore the oceans, in which 40 ships from 20 countries took part. The IIOE led to immense improvement in the understanding of the oceanography of the Indian Ocean, which has many unique features. The IIOE also facilitated human resource development in marine sciences in the region. One of its most important outcomes was the establishment of National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, which is now one of the finest oceanographic laboratories in the world .
The international community is celebrating the linked events of 50 years of completion of IIOE and Golden Jubilee of NIO's Foundation. For this purpose an international symposium on "Dynamics of the Indian Ocean: perspective and retrospective" is being organized at NIO, Goa, from 30 November to 4 December 2015. This meeting will be co-sponsored by the Government of India, Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR, USA) and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. The Symposium will culminate in the launching of the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2. The IIOE-2 will be implemented over the next five years utilizing latest advances in instrumentation including automated, ship board, satellite and laboratory based gadgets with real-time data transmission.
The Symposium is expected to be attended by over 500 scientists and researchers from all over the world. It will comprise keynote addresses by leading scientists, and other oral and poster presentations. Provision is also being made for exhibition of ocean technology and instrumentation by various manufacturers/ suppliers. The Symposium will thus provide them an opportunity to advertise and showcase their products to the international scientific community.
Organization ofa Symposium ofthis scale will be possible only with the support from various organizations including the industry. It is in this context that we are approaching you with a request to provide fmancial support to promote Indian Ocean research. We hope that you will generously contribute toward hosting of this event. As a sponsor you will be provided space and facilities to display any item or product of your choice at the venue of meeting.
